What does stump grinding involve?

A stump grinder breaks the remaining stump into small wood fragments, working below ground level to an agreed depth. It deals with the stump where it sits rather than lifting it out whole.

Grinding does not remove every root running through the surrounding ground. If you need space for a new tree, foundations or other construction, tell us before we quote so the work can be considered alongside those plans.

We can assess a stump after TreeWorX has removed the tree or one that has been there for years. Tree removal and stump grinding are separate parts of the work and should both be included in the quotation if you want both carried out.

You may have inherited a stump with the property or recently had a tree removed. Grinding can be a useful option where it obstructs everyday use or the changes you want to make.

When leaving the stump may be better

If a stump is not causing an obstruction, leaving it to decay can provide a home for wildlife. Removal is not always necessary. Tell us if the tree was diseased or the stump is producing unwanted shoots, as these may affect the advice.

Tell us how you would like the surface to look. We can agree the grinding work with that aim in mind, while making clear whether clearing the grindings and supplying soil are included. New turf or planting is not automatically part of stump grinding.

For new planting or building work

Share any plans or requirements from your landscaper or builder. A planting hole, fence post or foundation may need more clearance than routine grinding provides. We will explain if a different approach or further work needs to be considered.

Careful access, working and clear-up

The route to the stump matters as much as the space around it. Let us know about narrow gates, steps, tight turns, slopes or soft ground. An approximate gate width and a photograph of the route can help us decide what needs checking on site.

We consider nearby windows, vehicles, paving, fences and plants when planning the work. We also explain where people and pets need to stay clear while the machine is operating.

If you know of cables, pipes, drains or irrigation near the stump, tell us. We assess what checks and precautions are needed before grinding. Please do not dig around the stump to investigate these yourself.

Tell us about protected trees and existing conditions

Let us know if the original tree was protected, removed under a planning consent or subject to a replacement-planting condition. Nearby protected trees may also matter where their roots could be affected.

We can help explain what needs checking before the proposed work proceeds. Do not assume that an earlier permission to fell a tree covers every subsequent operation around its stump and roots.

Questions about stump grinding and removal

How much does stump grinding cost?

The price depends on the stump’s width, the number of stumps, access and the amount of grinding needed. A stump beside a wall or in a difficult-to-reach garden may involve more preparation than one in an open area. Handling the grindings and any agreed ground preparation also affect the scope. We provide a free quotation before you decide.

How long will the work take?

The time on site depends on the size and number of stumps, the equipment we can use and how much material needs handling. We discuss the likely duration after assessing the work. If access needs changing or permissions need checking, those arrangements may affect when the job can start.

Can you reach a stump in a back garden?

Often, but we need to check the whole route rather than just the gate. Steps, corners, changes in level and the space beside the stump all matter. Send a description or optional photographs of the access when you enquire. We will explain what is practical before agreeing the work; we do not promise that every machine will fit every garden.

What happens to the hole and the grindings?

Grinding leaves a mixture of wood fragments and soil. We agree how that material will be handled and how the area will be left. Topsoil, turf and other finishing work are not automatically included. If you need a finished lawn or planting area, say so when requesting your quotation, rather than assume grinding alone will deliver that result.

Can I plant or lay turf over the area afterwards?

Usually some ground preparation is needed first. Remaining wood, the depth of suitable soil and settlement can affect the result. A new tree may be better positioned away from the old stump. Tell us what you plan to plant or build so we can discuss the grinding scope and any further preparation before work starts.

Will grinding stop the tree growing back?

Some trees can produce new shoots from roots that remain after the stump is ground. The likelihood depends on the species and the work carried out, so we do not promise that grinding will prevent every instance of regrowth. Tell us about any existing shoots and we can discuss the appropriate next step. You do not need to identify the tree yourself.
